Google is facing a federal lawsuit brought by Illinois parents who claimed the company’s educational technology on Chromebooks invaded student privacy by allegedly collecting biometric data, Bloomberg Law reports. The parents claimed Google violated the state's Biometric Information Privacy Act. Google successfully argued that the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act superseded the BIPA and one of the parents’ claims was dismissed. The judge ruled Google may be in violation of the Illinois Student Online Personal Protection Act, which required edtech providers enter into direct agreements with schools.
