Germany's First Civil Division of the Federal Court of Justice is asking the Court of Justice of the European Union for a preliminary ruling on the legal standing of consumer protection associations in relation to potential data processing violations by Meta. The court said it is deciding whether Meta's potential failure to inform users of the scope, purpose for collection and use of users' data "gives rise to claims for injunctive relief under competition law and can be followed by consumer protection groups." Editor's note: IAPP Staff Writer Jennifer Bryant reported on a CJEU ruling confirming consumer groups have a right to file representative actions over alleged EU General Data Protection Regulation violations.
