In a Lawfare blog post, Harvard Law School student Chris Gorman summarizes the U.S. Government Accountability Office’s report on the use of facial recognition technology by federal agencies. According to the report, 10 agencies plan to expand use of facial recognition technology through FY2023, while nine plan to begin using new systems. Gorman notes concerns from privacy and civil liberties advocates, but said, “federal departments are poised to expand their use of facial recognition systems across a wide range of use cases in the absence of federal regulation.”
