U.S. Reps. Anna Eshoo, D-Calif., and Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., along with Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., introduced the Banning Surveillance Advertising Act. The bill would ban the use of personal information for targeted advertising, including the use of sensitive information and data purchased from data brokers. Eshoo said the "unseemly collection and hoarding of personal data" for surveillance advertising is a "toxic business model that causes irreparable harm to consumers, businesses, and our democracy." Schakowsky added this legislation would ideally be part of a comprehensive federal privacy law.
