European Parliament's Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee voted 36-7 in favor of the Digital Services Act. The committee added a package of amendments, including provisions for more transparency around targeted advertising practices and a ban on so-called "dark patterns." Danish Member of Parliament Christel Schaldemose said the EU is "democratically reclaiming our online environment" with the DSA, which is "bringing EU technology regulation into the 21st century." The European Parliament Plenary will vote on the amended text in January. Once approved, the EP will then begin negotiations with the Council of the European Union. Editor's note: IAPP's Jetty Tielemans explored the privacy implications of the DSA and the Digital Markets Act.
