A U.S. House of Representatives panel has asked the Department of Justice to study the use of artificial intelligence to analyze phone calls in United States prisons, Reuters reports. Prisoners’ advocates and families said the technology, which could transcribe inmates’ phone calls and analyze their tone of voice and language, raises accuracy and bias concerns. Proponents said it assists law enforcement and does not target race, genders or other groups. The technology is already in use at facilities in Alabama, Georgia and New York.
