Recommendations in a report by Australia’s House Select Committee on Social Media and Online Safety would require social media companies to set default privacy settings for children’s accounts to the highest level. Recommendations stemming from the committee’s social media probe also include requiring digital devices to contain optional parental control functionalities and a suggested review of digital platforms’ use of algorithms. Committee Chair Lucy Wicks said social media companies should have “the ultimate burden of providing safety” on their platforms.
