The New York Times reports facial recognition start-up Clearview AI closed a Series B funding round of $30 million this month. The funding has come in the midst of several class-action lawsuits and investigations into the company by the U.K. and Australia for use of citizens’ personal information. While investors were not identified, Clearview’s Chief Executive Officer Hoan Ton-That said they “include institutional investors and private family offices.” He said investors see a company’s “legal component” as “part of doing business.” Editor's note: IAPP Associate Editor Ryan Chiavetta, CIPP/US, reported on the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada's findings that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police use of Clearview AI violated the Privacy Act.
