Chatbots have begun to be used more broadly across the U.S. justice system, Reuters reports. Advocates claimed they improve access to court services while critics claimed automation can create errors, bias and privacy violations. In a 2021 report, the National Institute of Justice identified four types of criminal justice chatbots, those used by court systems, jails and prisons, police, and victim services. Currently, most criminal justice chatbots function more as menus without using artificial intelligence, and they are not involved in rendering legal decisions or arbitration.
