According to Access Now, the Court of Justice of São Paulo, Brazil, ordered the city's public transport, ViaQuatro, to end its use of facial recognition technology and subsequent data collection. The order put a halt to the collection of images, sound or any other personal data without prior consent. Brazilian Institute for Consumer Protection Digital Rights Program Lawyer Michel Roberto de Souza said the decision is justified because "it should not be permissible" for such a comprehensive system to operate "without adequately informing passersby, without transparency, and without asking for consent."
