U.S. Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., proposed the Facial Recognition Act of 2022. The bill contains provisions to regulate the use of facial recognition technology to what is necessary in the public and private sectors. It also provides for transparency requirements, annual assessments and reporting around use by law enforcement. "We need to build robust safeguards that provide transparency to the American people, prevent discriminatory algorithms, ensure defendants are protected with due process rights, and limit the use of the technology to only necessary cases," Lieu said.
