U.K. lawmakers are facing a potential fallout if encrypted messaging apps cease offering their services in the country if the Online Safety Bill includes provisions that require breaking end-to-end encryption in certain instances, Politico reports. After the heads of messaging services including WhatsApp and Signal wrote to the government opposing the legislation, Parliament members find themselves in the position of potentially being labeled as unserious about protecting children online if they don’t follow through to pass the law.
