The Wall Street Journal reports Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit against Meta claiming Facebook's prior collection of facial images violated state privacy statutes. Paxton said Facebook was "harvesting Texans’ most personal information—photos and videos—for its own corporate profit" from 2010 to the end of its facial recognition program in November 2021, estimating "tens of millions of violations" during that time. The lawsuit seeks civil penalties in the range of hundreds of billions of dollars. Editor's note: The IAPP's Jennifer Bryant reported on Facebook's curtailed facial recognition program.
