Gov. Kathy Hochul, D-N.Y., signed into law a bill banning the distribution of artificial intelligence-powered deepfake content depicting nonconsenusal sexual images. Violations of the law could yield a one-year jail sentence while victims can also invoke a private right of action for damages in civil court. "It is important we update the penal law to keep pace with advancements in technology," state lawmakers wrote in a legislative memo.
