  • The New York Times reports the European Union is nearing a deal on the Digital Services Act, legislation targeting misinformation and harms on social media. The proposal includes prohibiting advertisement targeting based on sensitive personal data. The final text of the DSA is not expected for several weeks.
  • A draft declaration in the U.S., anticipated to be launched April 28, outlines a series of principles “regarding the Internet and digital technologies,” Euractiv reports. The declaration condemns “misusing or abusing the Internet or algorithmic tools or techniques for unlawful surveillance, oppression, and repression.” Canada, the EU, Japan, South Korea and the U.K. have initially signed the Declaration for the Future of the Internet, while Ukraine is potentially participating as well.
  • In a speech at Stanford University, former President Barack Obama called for regulatory oversight of social media companies’ algorithms, saying technology platforms “need to be more transparent about how they operate,” The New York Times reports. Obama said tech companies “need to have some other North Star than just making money and increasing profit shares.”
