The Electronic Privacy Information Center filed an amicus brief in a case asking the Supreme Court of the United States to allow individuals to sue when their privacy rights are violated regardless of whether they allege they were affected by other harms. In the TransUnion v. Ramirez case, the plaintiff sued TransUnion for alleged violations of the Fair Credit Reporting Act; however, the credit-reporting agency argued the plaintiff has no "standing" to sue. Meanwhile, a California judge dismissed a data breach lawsuit against Walmart after finding the California Consumer Privacy Act was not applicable.
