The U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce formally introduced the American Data Privacy and Protection Act and scheduled it for committee markup June 23. Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Frank Pallone, D-N.J., Ranking Member Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., along with Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Commerce leaders Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., and Gus Bilirakis, R-Fla., released a joint statement saying the markup is "another major step in putting people back in control of their data and strengthening our nation’s privacy and data security protections." The leaders also noted they "welcome and encourage input" from relevant stakeholders as the legislative process moves forward. Editor's note: The IAPP's Joe Duball reported on the first House hearing regarding the draft bill.
