A 2020 IAPP survey of privacy and IT professionals found that in the previous 3 years, 50% of respondents reported one or more data breach, and 67% documented one or more privacy incidents. The CCPA imposes civil penalties of up to $2500 per violation and $7500 per international violation. These fine totals multiplied by millions of California residents for which violations could be counted towards, equals out to fines that could be sums larger than the FTC's $5 billion settlement with Facebook.
