Scaling governance programs for the models they deploy is emerging as a key hurdle to clear as artificial intelligence adoption efforts accelerate.

To help enterprises operationalize and automate their AI governance efforts, LuminosAI recently released its Automated AI Governance Package, a new solution within the LuminosAI platform. The Automated AI Governance Package offers a comprehensive AI governance framework that was built by ZwillGen AI Division.

The two entities previously partnered with each other to release the ZwillGen Law Library, which assists clients with automating AI risk assessments for predictive models and testing their models.

LuminosAI CEO Andrew Burt said the new automated solution allows companies to rapidly cover their bases if they feel as though they may have "gaps" in their existing AI governance programs. Within the four layers of the AI life cycle — awareness of the need to adopt AI, actively procuring AI solutions, operationalizing the model, and ultimately, systemic use of their models — the automated governance package is geared toward supporting an organization regardless of where they may currently fall within that spectrum.

"There are different stages of AI adoption and different levels, and so the idea behind this solution is to support every single customer no matter where they are in the adoption life cycle," Burt told the IAPP. "So for companies in the first two stages, they need to know what they’re doing for an AI governance program, and they get that from the ZwillGen side. As soon as they have that in place then they actually need to scale it, and make sure its enforced, so that is the automation part with Luminos AI."

The success of enterprise-level AI governance program hinges on the combination of comprehensive legal knowledge and governance automation within a trusted software platform. Burt indicated the new automation package carries that needed balance with design capabilities that facilitate the creation of "a set of custom policies, procedures, suggested contract language" that aid program building.

"Basically, the solution is a way to go from 0 to 100 in setting up, enforcing and automating an AI governance program," he added.

A major pain point for companies wading through the AI adoption life cycle is the laborious and manual process of conducting various assessments and documenting compliance efforts, according to ZwillGen's AI Division Brenda Leong, AIGP, CIPP/US.

"Companies building or deploying AI are quickly discovering that governance must evolve alongside the technology," Leong said. "By partnering with LuminosAI on the Automated AI Governance Package, we can offer our clients automated AI risk and impact assessments, with sufficient documentation to operate the AI governance infrastructure that we design for them."

The new automated platform will help customers navigate a fragmented global regulatory landscape with respect to emerging AI laws from the state-level in the U.S., to the EU and elsewhere around the globe. Burt said the problems facing organizations attempting to comply with emerging AI regulations are exponentially larger because there is "a limit" to the technical tools and measures that are put in place to ensure compliance with data protection regulations.

With AI, he added, the clearer answers that defined data protection compliance are not as firm.

"What makes AI so unique is it's extremely more technically complicated than privacy,” Burt said. "What we are seeing now is a very fragmented compliance and regulatory landscape. The timelines are complex and this job is only getting harder if you’re worried about protecting your company from any liability."
