I am thrilled to announce that Centre for Information Policy Leadership (CIPL) Global Strategy Advisor Richard Thomas has kindly offered to present a discussion for iappANZ members in Sydney on Wednesday, 11 February. There has been considerable international discussion in the last couple of years about a risk-based approach to privacy. At its simplest, this means concentrating on the likelihood and severity of the harms individuals can suffer if things go wrong.

The objectives of CIPL’s Risk Framework Project are discussed in detail in A Risk-based Approach to Privacy: Improving Effectiveness in Practice. The paper notes how the Privacy Risk Framework project elaborates on the centre’s earlier work on organizational accountability by seeking to develop analytical tools and a common framework and methodology for risk assessments that are needed to effectively implement key aspects of accountability.

Thomas, who is also former UK information commissioner from 2002 to 2009, will share thinking that CIPL has been developing and will talk about the outcome of workshops held in Paris and Brussels in 2014 with policy-makers, regulators and businesses. He will be joined by Australian Privacy Commissioner Timothy Pilgrim, NSW Privacy Commissioner Elizabeth Coombs and iappANZ Board Director Olga Ganopolsky. Also, this week the OAIC released its guide to securing personal information to help agencies and organisations meet their obligations under the Australian Privacy Principles to take reasonable steps to protect personal information. The guide emphasises the five steps that are necessary for agencies and organisations to take in assessing whether to collect personal information, how to protect it and what to do with it once it is no longer needed.
