I write these words from Baltimore, Maryland, where it is sunny and hot on this early autumn day. Data protection pros are streaming in from near and far for this year’s Privacy Academy.
In the past month, the Privacy List has been abuzz with questions, concerns and debates about browser fingerprinting, third-party security provisions and cookies. All of these topics, and many others, will be covered at the conference this week. If you are here, we hope you will continue the conversations in sessions and workshops dedicated to these pressing issues.
I’d like to extend a special welcome to our members from the government sector. The growing number of privacy professionals coming from this sector is a testament to the level of importance now being placed on privacy matters in governments. Today, 630 members hold a CIPP/G credential. In this issue of The Privacy Advisor, you will learn how one government agency has channeled its deep privacy experience to create guidance for other entities.
For those of you who are sitting for exams this week, congratulations on a taking a big step toward enhancing your professional expertise and advancing your career.
Finally, thank you to the dedicated IAPP members who volunteer their time to bring this and other events to fruition. Our program chairs, event volunteers and Education Advisory Board members are directly responsible for bringing privacy pros what has become the keystone of IAPP events—high-quality education by and for those entrenched in the field. Thank you for the important role you play in raising the knowledge level of privacy pros, thereby raising the quality of the profession. Our concerns will continue to grow. The capacity of privacy pros to handle them effectively is a direct result of your efforts.
Nuala O’Connor Kelly, CIPP, CIPP/G
President, IAPP
