Designing for Minors: A Practical Guide to US Children and Teens' Data Privacy
Thursday, 8 Oct.
16:00 - 17:00 EDT
Beginner level
Children and teens are at the center of the latest wave of U.S. privacy regulation. Beyond longstanding frameworks like COPPA, new and emerging laws — including age-appropriate design code acts and app store laws — are reshaping how companies can design products and services used by minors.
This session will provide a practical, business-focused update on the newest U.S. children and teens’ data privacy laws and the obligations they impose. The discussion will cover requirements such as age verification, limitations on profiling and targeted advertising, data minimization and retention expectations, default privacy and safety settings and impact assessments.
To ground the update in real-world practice, the panel will walk through a fact pattern involving a teen-focused app and associated web services, illustrating how these rules apply in practice. Using the fact pattern, panelists will walk attendees through how to identify which laws apply, considerations for user experience and design, coordinating with app stores and advertising partners, and understanding the regulatory and reputational risks associated with non-compliance. Attendees will leave with a practical framework to assess their own products and services.
What you will learn:
- How and when U.S. children and teens' data privacy laws are triggered.
- What the core requirements are under the laws in practice.
- How to operationalize compliance and manage risk using a real-world fact pattern.
