Assessing Age Across the Globe and Creating Compelling Spaces for Youth
Tuesday, 31 March
09:00 - 10:00 EDT
Intermediate level
Policymakers globally are increasingly expecting businesses to provide safe and differentiated experiences for youth. Australia is implementing a pause on social media until 16 and also requiring search engines to block underage users from certain content. The U.K. requires highly effective age assurance to prevent children from accessing pornography and other harmful content. The EU is piloting an age verification app. The U.S. Supreme Court found requiring age verification for pornography sites only incidentally burdens adults’ free speech, and states have passed laws requiring age assessment for design features and social media. Simultaneously, age assessment technology continues to propel forward, with options like facial age estimation, reusable ID wallets, interoperable age tokens, and app store age signals. International age standards (ISO and IEEE) provide a framework for regulators and relying parties. How can businesses navigate this disparate legal and technology landscape, creating compelling spaces for youth and satisfying lawmakers’ concerns?
