Privacy groups say IDs with online age-verification is ‘invasive,’ ‘risky’

Privacy groups are urging the Australian government not to require IDs within any online age-verification system, the Guardian reports. Options for age verification are being considered to prevent minors from accessing adult content online, some raising privacy and security concerns. “Age verification is a terrible combination of being invasive and risky, while also being ineffective for its purported purpose,” Digital Rights Watch Program Lead Samantha Floreani said. “The consequences of a breach of such a system would be devastating.”
