Macy’s has been using its radio frequency identification technology chips embedded on merchandise to reduce organized retail theft, The Wall Street Journal reports. Organized retail crime — when items are stolen for the purpose of being resold — has been identified by retailers as a growing problem in recent years. At Macy’s, RFID chips tagged to merchandise offer the retailer real-time information on where and when certain products were stolen. RFID data has also informed the business on where to focus security in stores.
