In the Australian honours system, appointments to the Order of Australia confer the highest recognition for outstanding achievement and service.  On Monday this week, it was announced that Malcolm Crompton has been appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia, for significant service to public administration, particularly to data protection, privacy, and identity management, and to the community.  This is a wonderful recognition of Malcolm’s work as a privacy professional — including as the founding president (and ongoing board member) of iappANZ and as Australian Privacy Commissioner from 1999-2004 (driving the implementation of the 2001 private sector provisions of the Privacy Act in Australia). Malcolm is also well known as the Managing Director of Information Integrity Solutions, as a much-published author and as an APEC Privacy Framework consultant.   Malcolm is a terrific mentor and friend to so many of us working in privacy — and the iappANZ board was delighted by this news. Congratulations Malcolm!

Please enjoy this week’s issue of the APAC Dashboard Digest, with privacy news from our region. You will see it includes a report on the new cloud services consultation paper from TRAI in India. Among other things, the paper suggests that data localisation requirements be considered for India (eg requiring Indian personal data to be hosted only in India). Personally, I’m not a fan of data localisation laws (anywhere), and think that energies could be better spent on promoting cross-border harmonisation — but I will leave you to read and to form your own views!
