Greetings readers, the holiday season is well and truly upon us, and many of you will already be in holiday mode. Cities are emptying, traffic is much easier, and you're doing things that are not the daily norm.

I'm writing this foreword at 4 a.m. in the departure lounge at Sydney, en route to London, and this is definitely not my usual daily commute. . .
