Greetings from sunny New England!
This week, I am at the IAPP’s headquarters in New Hampshire, USA, where we are reviewing progress, new developments, and planning for the year ahead. It has certainly been a high-octane first six months of the year, with our trainings (especially for GDPR) and conferences being sold out.
Asia Privacy Forum was no different and, last week, we hosted the fourth annual Forum in Singapore. The conference itself was bigger and better than ever. It and the add-on GDPR seminar were both fully subscribed. Almost 70 percent of the delegates visited from outside Singapore, and it was fantastic to meet so many of you in person. There was a lively vibe to the whole event. In fact, I think the Expo Centre is still buzzing! We had a fantastic array of speakers and panelists, including keynotes from Deputy Commissioner Yeong Zee Kin, Stephen Deadman from Facebook, and Larry Liu from Alibaba.
Make sure you book early for next year!
There have been rumors of a new data protection law in India for some time now. This week, amid continuing debate about privacy rights, the central government announced that it has formed an expert panel, which will study various issues relating to data protection in the country and suggest a draft data protection bill. While there is no specific deadline, the committee should have completed the information-gathering stage within eight weeks and is requested to “submit its report as expeditiously as possible.” We will watch with interest, but, for now, I need to return to other riveting news from India: the cricket scores!
Best regards,
Rona
