Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner Ann Cavoukian may need to clear off a shelf in her office. She’s recently been named the recipient of two awards for developing a concept that aims to embed privacy into new technologies from the ground up.

Coined by Cavoukian, the term “Privacy By Design” has become ubiquitous in the data protection field. It’s been used by European Data Protection Commissioner Peter Hustinx in his
for laws to govern new technologies, referred to by the French Data Protection Authority in its
for protecting personal data and
as a landmark resolution by international privacy commissioners at their annual conference in Jerusalem in October of last year.

To recognize her work in developing Privacy By Design as a concept, The International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) will present Cavoukian with the 2011 IFIP Kristian Beckman Award. The IFIP award honors Cavoukian’s “pioneering work for the concept ‘Privacy By Design’ (and) incessant activity as knowledge bridge between different stakeholders and parties to make societal sense to and of privacy protection in modern environments.”

The annual award recognizes an individual who has “significantly contributed to the development of information security, especially achievements with an international perspective.”

Cavoukian will accept the award via videoconference at the IFIP’s conference in June.

Meanwhile,
Intelligent Utility
magazine has named Cavoukian one of the “Top 11 Movers and Shakers in the Global Smart Grid Industry for 2011.” In her 2009 annual report, Cavoukian
building privacy into the smart grid in its infancy. She recently released a
on an Ontario utility’s approach to incorporating privacy into smart meter deployment, which she says should serve as the standard.

“Cavoukian, while not an electric utility leader...managed this year to make an enormous impact on the utility industry with her ‘Privacy by Design’ approach to utility customer data,” the magazine states.
