The ICO has offered to help small- to medium-sized businesses, charities, public authorities and not-for-profit organisations improve their data privacy practices by undertaking informal advisory visits.
An advisory visit would take one day and look at security, records management and subject access policies and procedures. Within each area, the ICO would look at what policies and procedures are in place in order to check that they are appropriate, verify that they are being followed and provide practical advice. The visit would then be concluded by a report that would summarise the findings and recommend areas for improvement.
The fact that a particular organisation received a visit would be published on the ICO's website. With the consent of the visited organisation, the ICO would also publish a brief summary of the visit, setting out the background to the visit, the areas reviewed and a summary of the “good practice” areas and those identified for improvement.
