The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has confirmed that it will not enforce new cookie “consent” requirements introduced under the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) (Amendment) Regulations 2011 (PECR) for a period of 12 months.

The amendments to PECR, which came into effect on 26 May, require that UK website operators obtain consent from visitors before serving cookies onto their computers. The ICO announcement means that, although PECR is already in force, no enforcement action will be taken before May 2012.

According to the ICO, this extra period will allow UK firms time to “get their houses in order.”
