Search engines should seek consent before keeping user data beyond six months, the CNIL has announced, while also expressing regret about Yahoo’s decision to extend the retention of user data from three to 18 months.
Yahoo explained that its decision to hold and analyze data for a longer period of time was in order to provide competitive services.
The CNIL, which has been leading discussions with Internet giants on data retention and behavioural targeting, is calling on all actors to comply with the G29 recommendations.
Needless to say, since Internet tracking practices are on the authority’s radar screen for onsite investigations in 2011, the CNIL will be checking whether the G29 guidance is being taken into consideration.
