The Ministry of Justice published a report summarizing the 163 responses it received following its Call for Evidence on how the existing data protection framework is working across UK and Europe.
The government has indicated that the responses have raised a number of key issues and practical matters that will shape its policy position in the upcoming EU negotiations, including the need to ensure that any new European data protection instrument is flexible, “future proofed” and technologically neutral but also provides greater clarity whilst minimizing bureaucracy.
Ensuring that the burden on data controllers is not disproportionate together with the protection of individuals’ privacy and associated rights are the government’s main objectives going forward and the standards against which any proposals will be measured.
