GPA: AI and Children: Rethinking Accountability in Digital Environments
Wednesday, 18 Nov.
09:45 - 10:45 CET
Advanced level
Part of the Global Privacy Assembly Open Programme.
AI systems are becoming deeply integrated into everyone’s everyday life, including the digital environments children navigate daily, from algorithmically curated videos and feeds to AI-powered learning apps, chatbots, gaming platforms and voice assistants. While these technologies can enhance learning through tailored education, support creativity and self-expression, improve accessibility and help children discover relevant content and communities, they are also prompting growing questions and concerns around accountability, transparency and their potential impact on children’s rights and well-being. Additionally, the emergence of agentic AI systems capable of autonomous decision-making, adaptive behavior and continuous interaction marks a significant shift in how digital technologies shape children’s experiences. These systems challenge traditional accountability and governance models, raising questions about responsibility, oversight and risk management across the AI lifecycle. This panel will explore how existing regulatory frameworks could address these challenges, highlight mitigation tools that already exist and examine how companies can design and deploy AI systems that better protect children.
What you will learn:
- How current AI systems impact children and where key governance gaps exist.
- How agentic AI represents a new layer of complexity.
- Practical approaches to designing and governing AI systems to better protect children.
