This session explores anonymization and pseudonymization through legal, industry and regulatory perspectives. We will start by charting the evolution from subjective to objective anonymization standards — and the middle ground now emerging — through recent guidance on pseudonymization and anonymization. We will also discuss GDPR cases like Breyer, SRB and case studies taken from other regulatory environments like Google Fitbit. We will examine how anonymization is now more relevant than ever, across multiple regulatory frameworks including the EHDS and the Data Act, and whether these new emerging laws provide further guidance or expectations. Along with reviewing the regulatory frameworks, the workshop will address real-world case studies and their implementation challenges. It will also share practical approaches to building “anonymization/pseudonymization” solutions as privacy enhancing technologies that are technically feasible and adapted to evolving standards, and how this maps against regulatory expectations.
What you will learn:
- The legal framework around anonymization and pseudonymization.
- How this framework aligns with the emergence of Privacy Enhancing Technologies.
- The emerging anonymization standard and how to apply it.
