AI Rules Across Borders: First Lessons from Europe and What is Next for Canada
Monday, 4 May
15:45 - 16:45 EDT
Intermediate level
As artificial intelligence regulation rapidly evolves, companies and institutions operating across borders face growing challenges. The European Union AI Act has started to kick in and already applies to several Canadian companies while Canada’s approach to AI is currently being shaped through consultations and sectorial laws. Meanwhile, the EU is assessing opportunities to simplify its digital regulatory framework to promote innovation, and seeking to clarify interactions between the EU AI Act and the GDPR. This panel brings together legal and industry experts from the EU and Canada to discuss the EU’s approach and Canada’s current regulatory landscape. The panel will explore what lessons can be applied to Canada's approach to AI and privacy regulation and how companies can manage compliance in this transitional period. Through practical insights, speakers will examine risk management, governance structures and the implications for privacy and data protection in both jurisdictions. Attendees will gain clarity on where regulatory pressures are headed and where they should focus their efforts when designing and implementing their AI governance program.
What you will learn:
• Key similarities and differences between the European Union and Canada’s approach to regulating AI, and the interaction between AI and privacy legislation.
• Practical strategies for AI compliance and governance across jurisdictions.
• Where businesses should focus their compliance efforts now, and how to prepare for future legislation in Canada and enforcement under the EU regime.
