Beyond the Brussels Effect: APAC Effect in AI Governance
Thursday, 23 July
10:30 - 11:30 SGT
Beginner level
For over a decade, the Brussels Effect has defined global data regulation, with the GDPR serving as the universal blueprint. But as the global priority shifts from foundational privacy to rapid AI innovation, a new momentum is building in the Asia-Pacific region. Led by lighthouse regulators, a Reverse Brussels Effect is emerging: one that focuses on agile, pro-innovation frameworks over prescriptive mandates.
This panel explores the rise of the APAC Effect. Drawing on the governance experiences from select APAC countries, we will explore how the region is moving from importing European standards to exporting pragmatic governance models. As global businesses seek regulatory clarity without stifling growth, these APAC approaches offer a compelling alternative to traditional Western models.
Finally, as the EU begins discussions on simplifying the GDPR to reduce administrative burdens, we ask: What can Western regulators learn from the light-touch philosophy? We will debate whether a shift toward voluntary certifications, sector-specific guidelines and reputational risk can effectively replace the heavy fines and rigid compliance that have defined the last decade of digital governance.
What you will learn:
• How APAC is now influencing global regulatory trends rather than just following them.
• How Korea and Singapore are striking a balance between AI innovation and data pro-tection.
• How Korea and Singapore’s evolving privacy laws are creating a new, pro-innovation benchmark for the rest of the world.
