IAPP Releases Results from Survey on Professionalizing Organizational AI Governance

60% of organizations have either already established a dedicated AI governance function or will likely establish one in the next 12 months

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – 5 December 2023 – Today, the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), the largest and most comprehensive global information privacy community and resource, released the IAPP-EY Survey results on professionalizing organizational AI Governance. This report was derived from data provided by survey respondents of the 2023 IAPP-EY Privacy Governance Survey.

“The prevalence of AI across all sectors has necessitated a conversation around the governance and regulatory policies of this rapidly developing technology,” IAPP Research and Insights Director Joe Jones said. “Today’s findings show not only what organizations are doing to manage the integration of AI but also the importance of growing a qualified professional workforce able to navigate the ever-changing AI landscape.”

Key takeaways from the report include:

  1. In 2022, AI governance averaged as the 9th most important strategic priority for privacy functions. In 2023, it is second.
  2. 56% of survey respondents work in organizations lacking an understanding of both the benefits and risks related to AI deployment.
  3. 60% of organizations have either already established a dedicated AI governance function or will likely establish one in the next 12 months.
  4. 57% of privacy functions have acquired additional responsibility for AI governance.
  5. 33% of survey respondents cited a lack of professional training and certification for AI governance professionals.
  6. 31% of survey respondents cited a lack of qualified AI governance professionals as a key challenge to the effective roll-out and operating of AI governance programs.
