Voter registration and advocacy groups have used geofencing techniques to gather the location data of individuals protesting across the U.S., The Wall Street Journal reports. University of California, Los Angeles Behavioral Economics Professor Keith Chen said while the data can help the groups, data subjects often do not know their information has been used due to the lack of rules around informed consent. “I do worry that it starts to put a chill on people’s willingness to peaceably assemble,” Chen said.
