The U.S. Department of Justice announced the release of a white paper on the Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data Act. “Promoting Public Safety, Privacy, and the Rule of Law Around the World: The Purpose and Impact of the CLOUD Act” includes input from across the department, describes the interests and concerns that led to its enactment, and provides “concise point-by-point distillation of the effect, scope, and implications of the Act.” Passed in March 2018, the CLOUD Act serves to provide the legal framework for how the U.S. government can access user data stored overseas, among other things.
