Dufresne served as law clerk and parliamentary counsel for the House of Commons since 2015. Trudeau touted Dufresne's background, noting how his "breadth of experience on human rights, administrative, and constitutional law" would "serve Canadians well in protecting and promoting privacy rights as Privacy Commissioner." Information Commissioner of Canada Caroline Maynard was named interim privacy commissioner through October after Daniel Therrien's term ended June 3.
