Americans received a failing grade for general knowledge of data protections on applications, devices and online, The New York Times reports, citing a survey conducted by the University of Pennsylvania Annenberg School for Communication. The survey of approximately 2,000 U.S. adults found, while citizens generally understood companies track emails and website visits, they did not know about the limited federal protections for their data. Overall, 77% of respondents answered at least nine of the 17 questions incorrectly.
