License plate scanners could become a leading instrument for law enforcement and anti-abortion groups to identify women traveling out of state to undergo the procedure, Wired reports. Known as automatic license plate readers, they are widely used by police and private companies nationwide. ALPRs can be mounted to telephone poles and buildings, and police who deploy them routinely share data between agencies with little oversight.
