Reddit has joined privacy groups criticizing New York’s proposed regulations for online currencies like Bitcoin, The Hill reports. Reddit, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and the Internet Archive said the regulations would infringe on the First Amendment, damage privacy and hurt innovation, the report states. New York’s Department of Financial Services proposed rules earlier this year to regulate Bitcoin. EFF Activism Director Rainey Reitman said digital currencies should be considered a “feature, not a bug,” as they strengthen privacy and are resistant to censorship, noting, “It’s an innovative way of importing some of the civil liberties protections we already enjoy offline into the digital world.”
