The backlash facing big tech firms over the use of personal data has given rise to smaller search engines that promise to protect user privacy, Phys.org reports. Traffic numbers prove that users are beginning to show interest in search engines like Britain's Mojeek, France's Qwant, Unbubble in Germany and Swisscows, which all promise not to track user data, filter results or show “behavioral ads.” Just last month, the French army and parliament announced they would drop the use of Google and turn Qwant into their default search engine in an effort to reclaim “digital sovereignty.”
