New Zealand Privacy Commissioner John Edwards is seeking public input on extending the Emergency Caller Location Information service. Implemented in 2017, the service more quickly locates those in need who have not made an emergency call. Edwards said he believes the service saves lives and reduces taxpayer costs, but he is aware that “unregulated, the proposed changes could enable the locating of almost any individual in the country at any time” and the technology “could be intrusive if misused.” The deadline to provide input is 28 Feb.
