The European Parliament passed amendments expanding Eurodac, previously a fingerprint database, to now allow for the biometric data collection from migrants to Europe for up to 10 years and sharing among police and border officials. On a recent episode of Euractiv's "The Tech Brief" podcast, European Parliament rapporteur the amendment, Spanish MEP Jorge Buxadé Villalba, discussed why the biometric data collection is necessary while an opponent of the measure claims the expansion of Eurodac entrenches mass surveillance of migrants.
