New Zealand's Office of the Privacy Commissioner and the Independent Police Conduct Authority are broadening an inquiry into the conduct of police over photographing of individuals who were not being detained or suspected of an offense. The inquiry began in December 2020 focusing on police taking photographs of Māori youth and will now include the photographing of other members of the public. A review will consider whether police actions complied with the Privacy Act, as well as compliance and enforcement actions in the event it is determined the police breached individuals’ privacy.
