Legislative proposals to regulate the fair processing of data in both Canada and the U.K. offer a “new direction” for data protection, writes Information Accountability Forum Executive Director Martin Abrams. The proposals, Bill C-27 in Canada and the U.K. Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport's consultation response, “Data: A New Direction,” seek to address the “linkage between probabilistic programing … and the protection of individuals from harm.” To ensure safe use of probabilistic programming legislation, such as C-27, it must be “explicit” in its objectives, “flexible in its processes” and “adaptable in its enforcement.”
