Ontario's Waterloo University removed 29 vending machines after students complained to the administration of their use of facial recognition technology, Midland Today reports. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada said it had not received a formal complaint regarding the vending machines use on campus, however, a spokesperson called the technology "concerning" and would further investigate the matter. The vending machines' operator, Adaria Vending Services, claimed the machines use motion sensors to detect if a customer is nearby, but does not store or process any biometric information.
